HYDERABAD: The anti-bauxite mining and river water protection committee has threatened to launch an agitation if the Government goes ahead with its proposal to launch bauxite mining and processing projects in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts. In a statement, Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Telugu Desam Party MLA from Chodavaram and convenor of the committee, said that it was absurd for the Government to come up with the allegation that the agitation against bauxite mining was funded by foreign agencies. “With all the machinery at its command why can’t it investigate, produce proof and take appropriate action,” he asked. If the charge is true, then the Congress too should face it as it had opposed similar bauxite mining projects in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh in 2000. It should also explain why it withdrew the project at Viskahapatnam in 1970 and why it allotted a part of the mining area to a foreign company based in Ras Al-Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates? Was it for other considerations especially at a time when 80,000 workers from Andhra Pradesh were being driven out of that place?
