BELLARY: Panic gripped cellphone users of Bellary and other taluks in the district over rumours that several cellphone users were reportedly affected after receiving a call from particular numbers. Cellphone users received an SMS cautioning them not to answer calls from a list of five numbers. The SMS mentioned that those answering the calls from these numbers would suffer brain haemorrhage and bleeding in the ears. On Tuesday, there was a rumour that two persons, one from Andhral and another from Millerpet, were affected and had been rushed to the VIMS Hospital. Newspaper and television channel offices were flooded with calls enquiring about this. A visit to the hospital revealed that no one with bleeding in the ears or brain haemorrhage was admitted on Tuesday. A youth from Andhral, suffering from brain fever, was admitted on Tuesday. Khaja Naseeruddin, Director of VIMS and an ENT specialist, said cellphone calls could not cause haemorrhage of the brain. Appeal
Amrit Pal, Superintendent of Police, has issued a press release appealing to the people not to heed to the rumours.
