SRINAGAR: The police on Tuesday put the hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani under house arrest but he managed to address a press conference here, condemning alleged human rights violations by security forces. Early in the morning, the police arrived at his Hyderpora residence and asked him not to move out. The area was also cordoned off by the police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force. Later talking to reporters, Mr. Geelani cited the instances at Bandipore, where two Army officials allegedly tried to rape a young girl, and in Kupwara, where four persons were killed. He said nothing could be expected of the inquiries ordered by the Army or civil authorities going by the past record. Mr. Geelani appealed to the people to observe a general strike on Friday. He himself would lead a dharna in Srinagar on July 5. “Complete withdrawal of Indian forces from each and every part of Jammu and Kashmir, which is a disputed territory,” and not demilitarisation, was “our demand,” he said.
