Randhawa, Chopra miss British Open berth

Sunningdale (England): Jeev Milkha Singh is likely to be the only Indian at the British Open golf tournament this year as Jyoti Randhawa and Daniel Chopra missed the qualifying mark on either side of the Atlantic.

Randhawa, who finished tied seventh in the French Open over the weekend, carded rounds of 71 and 70 to finish five shots off the qualifying mark and was unable to pick up one of 16 tickets available.

Randhawa could still make the British Open with a win at either European Open or the Scottish Open over the next two weeks.

David Bransdon shot 72 and 69, while Simon Hurd, another Asian Tour player, was on course after opening with a 66 but fell away with a 75 in the second round.

In the Open qualifier held in the United States, Daniel Chopra missed out after rounds of 67 and 76. He missed making the British Open berth by two shots, as did Australian Scott Hend.

Hend, third on the Asian Tour’s UBS Order of Merit, fired rounds of 76 and 67 for a 143 total, just two shots shy of the qualifying mark at Oakland Hills.

American left-handed Edward Loar, a two-time winner on the Asian Tour, signed in with a 145 total where 12 spots were available. — PTI
