CHENNAI: Qualifier Anjana Kompally stretched fifth seed S. Swetha over two sets before surrendering the third in the girls’ Under-14 pre-quarterfinals in the UC-MAS Singaram Pillai All-India (Talent Series) tennis tournament. Swetha won 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-0. The Hercules Turbo Drive TN State-level inter-school children’s chess tournament, organised by the Thiruvallur District Chess Association and Sethu Bhaskara MHSS, will take place on July 14 and 15 at the school premises. The tournament will be held in under-18, 14, 13, 10 and 8 age categories and will be played by the FIDE rapid rule (30 minutes each). A total of eight rounds will be played. “We are expecting more than 500 entries for the tournament,” D.V. Sundar, General Secretary, All India Chess Federation, said at a press conference here on Tuesday. The winners will receive the Kamalam John Samuel memorial Rolling Trophy and will also be given cycles. The TI Rolling Trophy will be presented to the best performing school. The Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, Madurai’s State senior tennikoit championship, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Tennikoit Association, will take place at the Sri Rajalakshmi MHSS on July 28 and 29. The Sowbaghya State tennikoit tournament for boys and girls (sub-junior), and the Velammal International School State tennikoit tournament (juniors) will also take place at the Sri Rajalakshmi MHSS, from July 27 to 29. Lakshmi Baliga and her navigator Rekha Rangarajan won the Duchess Club women’s car rally 2007 title comfortably in the regular category. In the novice section, the team of Rajashree Dinesh and Radhika emerged winners with their penalty score of 26.48 points, and in the exclusive category for the Duchess Club members Kiran Uttam and Jayanthi triumphed. The announcement of results in the experts’ category is delayed because of an appeal against the official result. The results: Regular (driver and navigator): 1. The Kanchi District Chess Association, in association with the Mount Chess Academy, will organise the district junior (u-19) tournament on July 7 and 8 at King’s MHSS. Kanchi district players born on or after January 1, 1988, are eligible. The top four in each category (girls and boys) will represent the district in the State sub-junior tournament next month. An all-round performance by I.T. Tabarak Baig, who scored 110 and took five for 63, enabled Vellore district to beat Nagapattinam district by two wickets in the first round of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association under-19 inter-district tournament at Ranipet on Tuesday. In another match, Dharmapuri district beat Nilgiris district by four runs. The scores: Nagapattinam 255 for 8 in 50 overs (R. Vivek 90, S. Surendran 61, I.T. Tabarak Baig five for 63) lost to Vellore district 258 for 8 in 50 overs (I.T. Tabarak Baig 110, T. Jagath Guruprasad 55, M. Bilvaprasad 35, V. Naresh Babu 37, J. Jayaku mar three for 48). Dharmapuri 211 in 43.1 overs (Zubair 75, M. Arunkumar 46, Nikhil Suresh three for 7) beat Nilgiris 207 in 49 overs (John Samuel Sundar 30, R. Vijay three for 34).
