The rain effect: A deluge of a different kind on a rain-soaked day. A scene from S.M. Road in the city on Tuesday.
KOCHI: Three relief camps were opened in Aluva taluk on Tuesday after houses of 49 families at Parakkadavu village were inundated. Fifty-seven members of 14 families have been shifted to two camps opened in the Government Lower Primary School, while those of 35 families are housed in a camp functioning in St. Joseph’s High School, Poovathussery. Flooded houses
Their houses, situated in low-level areas, were flooded by waters of the Chalakudy and Periyar rivers, revenue officials said. Another factor worsening their plight is the pitiable state of the Manjali canal, which had not been cleaned for some time, a senior revenue official said. Indiscriminate growth of weeds in the canal in the area close to the Madhurappuram bridge, on the Angamaly-Manjali stretch, has been one of the main causes for the flooding, he said. He said a report would be submitted to the State Government for cleaning the canal on a war footing. Thirty-six houses were partially damaged in rain in Ernakulam district during the 24 hours ending on Tuesday evening. As many as 161 people were evacuated, revenue officials said. In Paravur taluk, five relief camps are functioning. Kadungalloor, Eloor and Chalakka have a camp each and Kunnukara has two. Close to 350 people are staying in these camps. Many areas at Puthenvelikara village are waterlogged. In Kunnathunadu taluk, four houses at Vengoor village were partially damaged. The loss was estimated at Rs. 9,000. Two houses were partially damaged at Kuzhupilly village in Kochi taluk. A house at Koorikkad village in Kanayannur taluk was fully damaged. An immediate relief of Rs. 5,000 was paid to the house owner by the Revenue Department.
