Plant to produce power from bio-waste

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A plant for generating electricity from biodegradable waste is ready in Amballoor grama panchayat area. District panchayat president P.S. Shyla will inaugurate it on Wednesday at a function near the Arayankkavu market.

The plant has been set up by the district and grama panchayats, along with the Thiruvananthapuram-based Biotech, winner of this year’s Green Oscar.

Grama panchayat president Subhadra Gopinatha Panicker will preside over the function. Biotech director A. Sajidas will explain the functioning of the plant.

Of the construction cost of Rs. 10 lakh, the district panchayat contributed Rs. 5.8 lakh and grama panchayat Rs. 3 lakh. Biotech granted a subsidy of Rs. 1.2 lakh.

The plant is part of the district panchayat’s initiative to set up garbage treatment-cum-electricity-generating plants in all grama panchayat limits in the district. In the first phase, six panchayats, including Amballoor, have been selected.

The Amballoor plant is capable of treating 250 kg of biodegradable waste and generate 3,000 W of electricity daily. The power generated will be utilised for lighting 50 compact fluorescent lamps in the panchayat area.

Biotech, in association with local self-government institutions, has been setting up plants for the treatment of garbage produced in households. The non-traditional energy department is extending subsidies for setting them up through Biotech. In Amballoor panchayat area alone, 60 such plants are functioning.

Biotech has extended technical assistance for setting up treatment plants in 21 grama panchayat areas for generating electricity from market and abattoir waste.
