Staff Reporter

Council readies action plan for four years

To strive for better quality in higher education

Thiruvananthapuram: Coordination of curriculum reforms and the setting up of a higher education scholarship fund will be the thrust areas of action, it was decided at the meeting of the governing council of the Kerala State Higher Education Council.

According to a press note issued here the governing council put in place the action for the next four years. The other items on the Council’s agenda include formulation of a State policy on higher education, mapping of facilities in higher education, a review of the Acts of the State Universities, evolving a scheme for setting up college clusters, setting up centres for curriculum development and Examination Reforms, for academic capacity building, for manpower planning and employment and for institutional assessment and assistance, the press note said.

The governing council meeting on Tuesday was chaired by Education Minister M.A. Baby.

In his address he said the council would take effective steps to promote both quality and social justice in higher education. The universities should monitor the performance of the unaided institutions affiliated to them and take corrective steps as and when required.

Vice-chairman of the Council K. N. Panikkar who piloted the agenda said the Council would interact with universities to arrive at a consensus on the reforms. The real challenge would be for the universities to work out distinctive programmes within the parameters set out by the Council, the press note said.

Vice-chancellors of various universities, heads of Government departments, and members of the executive council attended the meeting, the press note added.
