BESCOM gears up to tackle problems

Chitra V. Ramani

Do not cut trees that have fallen on power lines

Do not use guy wire tied to a pole to dry clothes

Bangalore: With the onset of monsoon, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has taken steps to minimise accidents. Pre-monsoon maintenance works began almost two months ago, according to Sathyaprema Kumar, Communication Reforms Coordinating Officer of BESCOM.

This year, the BESCOM has taken up maintenance of transformers, tightened transformer jumps, put up intermediate poles and trimmed the branches of trees that are near the power lines. “We want to ensure that the number of accidents caused during monsoon are as low as possible. BESCOM has circulated a list of ‘dos and don’ts,” he said.

Mr. Kumar said that the electricity supply company had urged people not to chop down or remove trees that have fallen on electricity lines, or cut branches of trees near the overhead electrical lines. People had been requested not to touch electricity lines that have snapped, drive vehicles or bullock carts under sagging lines. He also said that people should not use the guy wire tied to a pole to dry clothes, tie banners or buntings to electrical poles or touch the fencing around transformers. For their own safety, people have been asked not to operate electrical switches/ equipment with wet hands, construct buildings close to electricity wires, energise fences or tie animals to electrical poles/ guy wires.

Mr. Kumar said that in case any of the above are noticed, consumers may contact the nearest BESCOM office or call the 24-hour helpline (12660). Consumers may also call 22287118, 22287119, 22356627 and 9844244638.
