Cattle trade resumes
M. Gunasekaran
POLLACHI: Exactly a month after the Kerala Government imposed restrictions on cattle brought from here, some of the merchants have resumed the trade sticking to the norms.
But a majority of the traders preferred to walk the cattle up to Kerala border.
Authorities are insisting that only six cattle should be carried in a lorry, which traders say is not economically viable. The price of cattle has come down by Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500 because of fall in demand from Kerala because of chikungunya outbreak. There is a dip in cattle loads from Andhra Pradesh.
Dozens of traders took their cattle by road – about 20 km from here to the Kerala border.
The Tamil Nadu Cattle Merchants Association has moved the Madras High Court against the travel restrictions.
