It is the only tank in Tirupur which is not polluted by effluents from dyeing units
Good catch: Heavy inflow of water into Noyyal has resulted in tanks filling up. A scene from Andipalayam tank in Tirupur. –
TIRUPUR: Water level at Andipalayam tank is increasing because of the heavy inflow into the Noyyal during the last couple of days. The 75-acre tank is likely to overflow anytime. The Aandipalayam Green Park Promotional Trust had desilted the tank and renovated the 5.5 km-long feeder canal to the tank from the Noyyal river at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh. The tank overflowed in 2005 after a gap of nine years. The Noyyal, when it reaches Tirupur, becomes polluted, as hundreds of dyeing units are reportedly discharging crores of litres of effluents every day into it. The Andipalayam tank assumes significance as there is no discharge of effluent into it. The trust chairman and Royal Classic Group’s executive director R. Sivaram says that the trust has plans to deepen the tank by one metre to facilitate boating. “We expected heavy inflow by the end of July but the tank received a copious inflow a month ahead. Bushes and rocks need to be cleared besides deepening the tank evenly,” he adds. The introduction of boating facility will be a boon to the people of Tirupur. “There is great scope to introduce boating at the tank. It will generate revenue to the local body too,” Mr. Sivaram adds. The trust will execute the work next summer when the tank gets dry. The tank will help farmers irrigating over 500 acres, sources say.
