Remembering a saint: Home Minister M.P. Prakash with singers, Sangita Katti, C. Ashwath, Ravindra Handiganour, Yeshwanth Halabandi, Muddu Mohan, Shimoga Subbanna and Ravindra Soragavi in Bangalore on Tuesday.
Bangalore: In a rare musical fete “Tatvarasanubhava” that emphasised human integrity on mundane and metaphysical planes and the dire need of communal harmony in the present global context, Bangalore Doordarshan Kendra’s Chandana channel paid rich tributes to the saint poet Shishunala Sharif (1819-1889) and his mentor Guru Govinda Bhatta. The three-hour programme was telecast live on Tuesday. Explaining the objectives of the programme, the kendra’s Director Mahesh Joshi said the compositions Sharif had emphasised religious harmony and musical rendering of them was an attempt to establish the subtle and harmonious relationship between music and spiritualism among humans. Essence
Hussein Sab of Sharif’s lineage said programmes such as “Tatvarasanubhava” should help carry the essence of Sherif’s life and works and the vitality of role model relationship between him and his Guru Govinda Bhatta in the larger interest. Poet K. S. Nisar Ahmed asked that though Sharif had been read and revered on a par with Sant Kabir and recognised as the first ever Muslim poet in Kannada, was it fair to brand him as Muslim poet as he was beyond mundane religious boundaries. He took objection to rendering of poems in an arbitrary fashion at the cost both the sense of music and the literary values. Minister for Home M. P. Prakash, Opposition Leader in the Legislative Council H. K. Patil, former Union Minister C. K. Jaffer Shariff, M.P. Manjunath Kunnur, industrialist L. Srihari Khode and film artiste Dwarakish spoke on the importance of Sharif’s outlook on life in the development of nation on perfect secular edifices. Acclaimed singers such as C. Ashwath, Shimoga Subbanna, Puttur Narashima Naik, Sangeetakatti Kulakarni, Muddu Mohan, and Yeshawantha Halabandi rendered the poems composed by the poet.
