Date extended for admission to minority hostels

Government to construct 12 hostels

Free education for hostellers

HYDERABAD: The Minority Welfare Department has decided to extend the last date for submission of applications for admission to the pre-matric hostels run by the department to July 10.

A decision to this effect has been taken following poor response to the earlier deadline June 30 in a majority of districts barring Krishna.

According to Minority Welfare Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir, response was not forthcoming because of ineffective publicity and the department had decided to bring out pamphlets in Telugu and Urdu about the facilities being provided to minority students in the hostels.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the Minister said the Government had constructed 12 hostels -- five for girls and seven for boys -- in different districts.

Each hostel with an intake of 100 was sanctioned Rs. 21.3 lakh a year with a total budgetary allocation of Rs. 2.55 crore. The department had taken enough care to provide free education and scholarships to students admitted to the hostels on a par with Backward Classes.

It was decided to ensure reimbursement of tuition fee in July-August once the admission process was completed.

Referring to the Sachar Committee report, he said Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy would convene a meeting of officials concerned within a week to finalise the modalities for implementation of the recommendations.

The Government had decided to develop the wakf properties under public private partnership mode and the Law Department had given its consent to the proposal.
