The book highlights the highly discussed ecological issue of global warming
Paristithi Kaipustakam, a collection of environmental essays in English and Malayalam published by the Kozhikode-based Darsanam Samskarika Vedi in association with the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment is an honest and ambitious attempt to sensitise schoolchildren on environmental issues. The handbook, released in connection with the World Environmental Day celebrations in Kozhikode last week, highlights one of the most discussed ecological issues; global warming. The theme is the rise in temperature on account of the increased presence of carbon dioxide, methane and other green house gases. Kozhikode Collector A. Jayathilak released the handbook by handing over a copy to Literacy Mission’s state committee member K. Sreedharan at a function at the Collectorate. Edited by M.A. Johnson, the book features articles such as thoughts on World Environment Day, global warming and its impact, the world we live, ways to observe World Environment Day, days to remember and hazards of plastics. “Our target is to create awareness among schoolchildren through eco-clubs. Each club generally comprising 30-50 schoolchildren who are interested in the issues related to environment. The book will be distributed free to them,” says M.K. Sreekumar, secretary, Darshanam Grandashala. Scientists R. Ajay Kumar Varma and M.R. Venugopal and Kozhikode Assistant Commissioner of Police (South) K. Jayendran have contributed to the anthology. This 30-page collection gives in alphabetic order 77 ways to observe World Environment Day. Using recycled materials , conducting auctions to benefit environment projects, bicycle processions, cleaning campaigns, and screening environment films have been mentioned in the handbook. Some of these suggestions borrowed from the bulletin of the United Nations Environment Programme, also focuses on cleaning the neighbourhood, rainwater harvesting, vermicomposting and rehabilitating natural habitats. It also proposes the use of environmentally sustainable modes of transport. Biju Govind
