NEW DELHI: Punjab on Wednesday sought financial and technical assistance from the Centre towards improving the canal-based schemes of the Rural Water Supply Schemes which faced problems of inadequate and polluted water. Taking part in the All India State Ministers conference on ‘Sustainable drinking water supply and sanitation for all – 2012’, Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation Minister, Bikram Singh Majitha, thanked the Centre for considering an innovative proposal by the State Government to provide round-the-clock safe drinking water to 40 lakh rural people, a State Government release said. The Minister also requested the Government of India to make liberal allocation towards improving the water and raising the services level in rural water supply schemes from the present 40 litres per capita daily to 70 litres per capita daily. Strong plea
He also made a strong plea for implementing the centrally sponsored schemes to enable scheduled caste families to have private drinking water connection and sought Rs. 10 crore annually for generating information, education and communication based mass awareness campaigns among rural people.
