With reference to the news report ‘Gang assaults Official Liquidator’ published on June 25, 2007 in these columns, Deputy Official Liquidator M. Manuneethi Cholan writes that he was not arrested, as stated in the report.
The Hindu learns that Mr. Cholan was questioned in connection with the investigation of the assault case, and later released.
The First Information Report filed at the Sastri Nagar police station, Chennai, in relation to the case lists “Manuneethi Cholan and 5 unknown persons” as among the “Known/Suspected/Unknown accused” in the case. The offences stated in the FIR are under sections 506(ii), 307, 147, 148, 324 and 325 of the Indian Penal Code.
The Hindu published the report on the basis of the statement on record made by Assistant Commissioner of Police M.A. Baskaran that Mr. Cholan had been arrested and cases had been booked against the accused on charges of rioting, attemp
t to murder, and threatening with dangerous weapons.
However, Mr. Cholan was not remanded to custody. The Hindu wishes to place this on record.
