Malappuram suffers heavy loss

Four persons killed in floods, houses damaged in district


District has received 1,000 mm rainfall since July 1

Crops in 490 hectares destroyed

MALAPPURAM: The district suffered heavy loss in the incessant rain since July 1. Four people were feared killed in the floods in different parts of the district.

The search for the bodies of Nisar, 22, continued on Wednesday even as the swollen Bharatapuzha, Thoothapuzha, Kanjiramukkupuzha,

Kadalundipuzha, Poorapuzha, Tirur-Ponnani Puzha, and the Chaliyar inundated their banks.

Nisar, son of Kuriyante Purakkal Sadak of Koottayi, had fallen off a fishing boat when it came into contact with an electric line at Ponnani on Tuesday evening.

The body of Mustafa, 30, who went missing on Tuesday morning at Alathur Padi, was found at Melmuri on Wednesday evening. The body of Ayyappan, 40, who was missing for the past two days from Kottukara, nearKondotty, was found on Wednesday. The body of Shameem, 18, son of Ibrahim Kutty of Keezhuparamba, was found on Tuesday night. Shameem drowned in a flooded field at Keezhuparamba.

Many parts of the district continued to be under water on Wednesday. Traffic on National Highway 213 was restored as floodwaters receded by Wednesday morning.

According to official figures, the district received about 1,000 mm rainfall since July 1. On Tuesday alone, the district got 142 mm rainfall.

Sixty-two villages spread across the taluks of Perinthalmanna, Eranad, Nilambur, Tirur, Ponnani and Tirurangadi were affected by the floods, displacing nearly 10,000 people. Agricultural crops in 490 hectares were destroyed in the floods, inflicting a loss of Rs. 3.5 crores, according to official figures.

Government officials, however, admitted that it was too early to estimate the exact loss of agriculture as many parts were still under water.

Official figures said 75 houses were destroyed.
