Congress strategy for legislature session

Special Correspondent

We will raise several issues, says Dharam Singh

N. Dharam Singh

BANGALORE: The principal Opposition in the State, the Congress, is expected to raise several issues, including farmers’ suicides, in the Legislature session scheduled from Thursday.

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh told presspersons here on Wednesday that the Opposition would raise several issues with a bid to “attack” the Government during the session.

The Government had announced several schemes that were “impracticable” when it came to implementation.

The ban order on arrack has been enforced without adequate police personnel to check the manufacture and sale of illicit liquor, he said.

Without foreseeing the consequences on the financial health of the State, the Government had implemented the pay commission recommendations and banned the sale of arrack, he said.

The former Chief Minister said the Congress would expose the Government’s failures on all fronts during the session.

The party would oppose land acquisition for a proposed Special Economic Zone at Nandagudi in Hoskote taluk and for new townships around Bangalore. The Government, which has claimed that it was pro-farmer, has done nothing for farmers.

With the waiver of cooperative loans, many cooperative institutions did not have resources to extend farm credit.

As many as 172 farmers committed suicide since the Janata Dal (S)-BJP Government came to power, he said.

The Government would not be allowed to table Bills and conduct proceedings of the House till it clears all doubts raised by the Congress.

As many 21 Bills would come up for discussion. Even as floods claimed the lives of many and destroyed standing corps on 5,588 hectares of land, funds have not been released from the Calamity Relief Fund to pay compensation to the affected families, Mr. Dharam Singh said.
