TAMBARAM: Nine councillors of the 15-member Madambakkam town panchayat have written to the Kancheepuram Collector, stating they did not have “confidence” in the functioning of S. Vimala, woman president of the urban local body.
Ms. Vimala of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, however, said it was part of attempts made by ruling partymen to usurp power.
She was elected president of the town panchayat after nine of the 15 councillors cast their votes in her favour last year.
There are 4 AIADMK councillors, 5 from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and the rest were elected as independents. She told reporters on Wednesday that for the past one year, the functioning of the local body’s administration was smooth. Various development works worth Rs. 2.5 crore, were executed. Even a fortnight ago, all councillors attended the routine meeting and gave their consent to subjects on the agenda, including identifying land for the proposed underground drainage project.
‘Putting pressure’
She alleged that functionaries of the Kancheepuram district unit of the DMK were putting pressure on the local body administration and instigating the local body’s councillors against her.
