Seminar conducted

Chennai: The Ethiraj College for Women conducted a one-day seminar on the topic ‘Enhancing Excellence in Sports’ at its premises here on Wednesday.

The idea of the seminar was conceived by the college Principal, Dr. M. Thavamani, for motivating and guiding the sportswomen of the college.

In his inaugural address, Dr. R. Thirumalaisamy, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, stressed on the need to treat physical education as a foundation for sporting excellence.

He came forth with recommendations such as bettering infrastructure and subsequent tax concessions and making physical education compulsory at primary, secondary and higher secondary levels of education, for better sporting success.

Ethiraj College Physical Director, Dr. Neeta Gunaseelan, Chairman, Justice S. Jagadeesan, Thavamani and Trust Board Member, V.N. Muralidharan, also addressed the gathering.

Ramesh Praba, Managing Director, Galaxy Communication Service Ltd, spoke on the importance of a sound value system for sustained sporting success.

Natarajan, Superintendent of Customs, and a former athlete, emphasised on high-level performance and training in athletics.

The subject of inculcating culture, fitness and hygiene as an integral part of sport was dealt with by Dr. Kannan Pugazhendi, Director, Fitness Foundation Academy, YMCA College of Physical Education.

CCP beats RPF

Chennai City Police defeated RPF 19-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 in the men’s section of the Chennai District ‘A’ division volleyball league championship.

Other results: Women: GKM bt SDAT 25-16, 25-16, 25-12.

State-ranking tennis

Pro-Tennis Initiative will conduct a State-ranking tournament from July 16 to 22 at AM Jain College. Call 98842-45300 / 98842-59805 for details.

VASPO 2007

MOP Vaishnav College for women will organise VASPO 2007, an annual inter-collegiate tournament from July 9 to 11. Around 500 players from the premier colleges in the country will take part.

The three main events are basketball, volleyball and table tennis.

Throwball trials

Trials to select the State teams for the junior National throwball championship will be held at Hindu HSS, Adyar, at 8 a.m. on July 8.
