Chennai: The Ethiraj College for Women conducted a one-day seminar on the topic ‘Enhancing Excellence in Sports’ at its premises here on Wednesday. The idea of the seminar was conceived by the college Principal, Dr. M. Thavamani, for motivating and guiding the sportswomen of the college. In his inaugural address, Dr. R. Thirumalaisamy, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, stressed on the need to treat physical education as a foundation for sporting excellence. He came forth with recommendations such as bettering infrastructure and subsequent tax concessions and making physical education compulsory at primary, secondary and higher secondary levels of education, for better sporting success. Ethiraj College Physical Director, Dr. Neeta Gunaseelan, Chairman, Justice S. Jagadeesan, Thavamani and Trust Board Member, V.N. Muralidharan, also addressed the gathering. Ramesh Praba, Managing Director, Galaxy Communication Service Ltd, spoke on the importance of a sound value system for sustained sporting success. Natarajan, Superintendent of Customs, and a former athlete, emphasised on high-level performance and training in athletics. The subject of inculcating culture, fitness and hygiene as an integral part of sport was dealt with by Dr. Kannan Pugazhendi, Director, Fitness Foundation Academy, YMCA College of Physical Education.
