MUMBAI: Unit-3 of the Tarapur Atomic Power Station, a 540-MWe pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) attained the 100 per cent operation level at 3.45 p.m. on Wednesday. This made it the largest single power generating unit of any kind in the country, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) said in a press note here. Unit-3 started commercial operation on August 18 last and since then the NPCIL has raised its capacity utilisation in a phased manner. “All experiments and tests have been completed to ensure that the design limits are validated.” Unit-3 is the second 540-MWe PHWR at Tarapur. The success in operating it at 100 per cent capacity has boosted the confidence of the NPCIL, which is planning to upscale the PHWR design to 700 MWe. It proposes to build eight 700-Mwe PHWRs during the 11th Plan period. The NPCIL has comprehensive capability in all facets of nuclear power technology including the designing of reactors, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance and also life extension of nuclear power plants.
