Palace allotment move flayed

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has criticised the Andhra Pradesh Government to “surrender” Paigah Palace, the heritage building in Begumpet, for the United States consulate after asking HUDA to vacate the premises.

There was nothing wrong in giving facilities such as land and office space, but the Government should not have moved out its offices for accommodating the consulate. “It will be construed as succumbing to U.S. imperialist pressure,” CPI (M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Yechury faulted the Government for not resolving the ongoing land struggle launched by the Left parties that was receiving overwhelming support from the people. The Left parties were not asking for anything new, but were demanding that the Government fulfil its promises. He dismissed the claims of the Government that there was no need to concede the Left demands as the Government had been distributing lands and house sites. “Why are the movements receiving so much of response if everything is right?” he asked, ridiculing the Congress’ claim that lapses were bound to occur when schemes of such magnitude were implemented.
