BANGALORE: After the Indian youth team finished second best behind Iran and qualified for the 10th World youth volleyball championship for boys in Mexico, comes the Indian senior team’s title win in the Central Asian Zone championship at Islamabad. The successes have done immense good for Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) to push the game back into the priority list of sports. K. Murugan, secretary general of VFI, speaking to reporters at a press conference announced that “the recent success has helped us demand our rightful place amongst the priority category. True, after the Asian Games performance there was a lot of self doubt. But the twin success of late and overall consistent performances in all age groups in itself is a pointer towards the promotion of the game into the elite list”. The international calendar for the immediate season was released with India playing host to the Commonwealth Championship at Kolkata from July 29 to August 4 being the top event. Seven countries, as per FIVB’s rankings, have confirmed their participation. They are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and host India. The return leg of the Indo-Pakistan Test series will follow the Commonwealth championship with Vishakapatnam (August 7 and 8), Chennai (August 10), Coimbatore (August 12) and Hyderabad (August 14) being the venues. India had tied 2-2 in Pakistan. The Indian senior volleyball team will participate in the Asian Volleyball championship (men) to be held at Indonesia from September 1 to 9, while the Youth team will figure in the World youth championship to be held in Tijuana and Mexicali from August 15 to 26. Shaheem (all attackers); Sube Singh, G. Pradeep, Shelton Moses, Somanath Giri Gowda (all blockers); Sanjay Kum ar, Mandeep Singh and Vijesh (all universal); Kapil Dev, Ukkra Pandian, Darshan (all setters), Sivarajan and Kiran Philip (both liberos). G.E. Sridhar (chief coach), Karimullah (Asst. coach), Harilal (trainer). Youth (for World youth championship): Lalit Kumar, Ankit, M.Naveen, G. Kumar, Chandershekar Raju, G.G.
