‘Mangani tourism festival’ draws crowds

KARAIKAL: The four-day ‘Mangani tourism festival’ conducted by the Tourism Department of the Puducherry Government for the first time in Karaikal evoked a good response as a large number of people turned up to witness the festival.

The festival, being held at Murugaram municipal grounds, is marked by cultural programmes such as dance, drama, light music etc. The Collector, N. Vasanthakumar, presided over the function. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MLA of Karaikal and leader of the Opposition in the Puducherry Assembly, A. M.H. Nazeem, and Secretary, Tourism Department, A.Anbarasu, spoke.

The function began with a folk dance by a local troupe and dummy horse dance by Ganesh and Gopu troupe of Orathanadu in Thanjavur district. The artistes thrilled the audience with their performances.

Several entertainment programmes, including a drama on the life history of Karaikal Ammaiyar by Karai. Subbiah and party, Bharathanatyam by Charulatha Jayaraman of Tiruchi, music debate by Saraswathi Ramanathan and magic show by Alex and troupe of Chennai would be held on the four days.

A number of people who came to attend the tourism festival also enjoyed visiting the floating restaurant commissioned recently by the Puducherry Tourism Development Corporation on the Arasalar river in Karaikal.
