NEW DELHI: A court here on Wednesday granted bail to a Mumbai-based fugitive, who had been arrested on an extradition request from the United States where he is wanted in a hit-and-run case, but imposed restrictions on his movement in Mumbai. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau granted bail to Ganesh Upendra Shenoy, who was arrested in Mumbai on June 29 following the extradition request, on furnishing a personal bond of Rs. 2 lakh with one surety of like amount. The court also asked Shenoy to report to the Chembur police station in Mumbai every Saturday and asked him not to leave the city without prior permission of the officer. Shenoy was also restrained from leaving the country without prior permission of the court. The court also asked him to surrender his passport. Earlier, the prosecution had opposed Shenoy’s bail plea contending that he had absconded from the investigation and was also not participating in the jury proceedings in New York. Shenoy’s counsel argued that he had been a permanent resident of Mumbai for 35 years and since he had been arrested from the same address, there were no chances of his absconding from the law. Counsel also requested the court to release Shenoy on bail while assuring that whatever conditions the court imposes would be followed by his client. Shenoy is accused of fleeing the U. S. following a hit-and-run car accident on April 11, 2005, in which one man was killed.
