Pallikkal panchayat to launch English teaching project

MALAPPURAM: The Pallikkal grama panchayat in the district has given shape to an innovative English learning programme targeting primary classes in 10 select schools in the panchayat. The project titled Grama Siksha Abhiyan-2007 will reach out to 900 students of first standard in the initial phase.

K.C. Saidalavi, president of Pallikkal panchayat, said that the panchayat would freely supply an English primer titled ‘My English Book’ prepared by N. Anand, linguist and proponent of modern curriculum. All first standard students would be given the book this year. The project would be expanded to the second standard next year, he said. Mr. Saidalavi said the panchayat could not give the project for allocation of funds last year and, therefore, they had to resort to a fund collection drive. He said the project would give an orientation among the students of Malalayam medium primary schools on English learning in a modern way.

“We will follow up the project in the years to come,” he said, pointing out that it would ultimately cover the entire primary section.

The institutions to be covered by the Grama Siksha Abhiyan include the primary schools at Karipur, Tharayittal, Pallikkal, Puthur Pallikkal, Chirayil, Kozhipuram and Chirayil Chungam.

K. Mohammedunni Haji, MLA, would inaugurate the project at a function to be held at the panchayat hall at Pallikkal Bazaar on Saturday afternoon. The students in the panchayat who excelled in various examinations would be honoured on the occasion.
