Municipal council discusses the issue TDP wants municipality to assert its right
VIZIANAGARAM: Municipal Council at its meeting on Thursday has sought the allotment of 0.5 tmc feet of water from Tarakarama Theertha Sagar project instead of 0.162 tmc feet earmarked earlier by the Chief Engineer (Irrigation). The meeting has decided to write to the Chief Engineer keeping in view of the growth in population from 1.91 lakhs in 2006 to the projected 3.55 lakhs by 2036. At present the town is getting 19 million liters of water from Champavathi and Gosthani rivers. The Central Public Health, Engineering and Environment Organisation in its report put the requirement at 55 million liters by 2036 at the rate of 155 liters per head. The municipality must have to tap other sources by then for meeting the additional demand of 36 million liters. Municipal Chairperson M. Geetha said the Irrigation Department had allotted 0.162 tmc ft from the project for the town and added that B. Satyanarayana, Minister for Housing, and K. Veerabhadra Swamy, MLA, at a recent meeting asked the Municipal Council to write to the CE for the additional share. Appeal
TDP Councillor M. Chandrasekhar while appealing to the Chairperson to protect the existing infiltration wells in river Champavathi from getting dried on account of diversion wall being built as part of the project work and added that the municipality assert its right for one tmc ft as envisaged in the project design.
