NEW DELHI: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has withheld declaration of the results of its senior residency selection written examination-cum-interview held this past month following allegations that the Institute’s administration had discriminated against students from the reserved category. “We have withheld the results as we had to seek legal advice on the issue. The results would be announced in a day or two,” said AIIMS spokesperson Shakti Kumar Gupta. Refuting charges of discrimination in the selection process held in June, Prof. Gupta added: “The written examination was conducted for eligible candidates in June and candidates who got 50 per cent marks or more in the written examination were eligible for consideration for the departmental assessment. The total number of candidates called for the departmental assessment was three times the number of seats available. In the unreserved category, a total of 409 appeared in the senior residency entrance exam and 170 qualified. Finally 67 were selected depending on vacancies. In the reserved category, a total of 98 candidates appeared and 32 qualified. Finally 24 were selected depending on vacancies. The Institute has now sought legal advice on the selection procedure and results in the wake of complaints.” Meanwhile, the Sub-Dean (Academics) of the Institute, Sunil Chumber, has written to the AIIMS authorities questioning the “floating reservation policy” which he claims is being followed by the institution. ``The system continues to deprive the benefit of reservation to suitable candidates. It was decided in December 2006 that a roster-based allocation for senior residents will be followed by the Institute. This is yet to be done. The floating reservation system is not mentioned anywhere in the Government guidelines and does not seem to benefit the students.” Dissociating himself from the selection procedure at AIIMS, Dr. Chumber added: “In the two selection processes that I have been associated with, we have totally failed to give the mandatory reservation under the law”.
