2-day-old baby survives ‘murder attempt’

S. Venugopal

MAHABUBNAGAR: In an incident that could be termed as ‘straight out of fairy tale’, a baby girl, barely 48 hours old, survived an alleged murder attempt in the outskirts of her native Utkoor, a mandal headquarters town in the district.

Buried alive in the ground, allegedly by her own elders, it was a dog digging at the place where she was buried that aroused the curiosity of a few shepherds who were shocked to suddenly see a little hand sticking out.

Rushed to hospital

Around the same time, a tractor driver Ramu was passing by. On finding the baby, he immediately pulled her out and took her to the Primary Health Centre at Utkoor. The doctor referred the case to the District Headquarters hospital, where she was rushed using a ‘108’ ambulance.

Utkoor Sub-Inspector Venkat Reddy, who was alerted, took the baby’s mother Nuran Bee (18) and grandfathers Abdul Rehman and Abdul Rasheed into custody on suspicion after preliminary investigation. A case was registered under Section 307 of Criminal Procedure Code.

Interrogation revealed that Nuran Bee was one among the seven daughters of Abdul Rehman. Her husband had only a few months ago, migrated to Maharashtra in search of work. Nuran’s parents and elders, realising that the baby she delivered on Tuesday was a girl, were so upset that they decided to get rid of her.
