CPI leader remanded to judicial custody in A.P.

ELURU: Andhra Pradesh Secretary of the CPI K. Narayana along with 15 others was remanded to judicial custody and sent to Rajahmundry Central jail on Thursday on the charge of attacking the Koyyalagudam Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO).

They were all produced before the Additional First Class Judicial Magistrate, O. Venkata Nageswara Rao, at Jangareddygudem who remanded Mr. Narayana and the others to judicial custody for 15 days.

Police registered cases against them for criminal assault, causing injury, unlawful assembly and criminal intention in connection with the CPI’s protest against the eviction of encroachers from endowment land at Rajavaram village in Koyyalagudem. The demonstration turned violent and ended with the alleged attack on the local MRO, S. Tirupati Rao.

Spate of protests

Meanwhile, the attack on the MRO triggered a spate of protests by various Government employee associations across the district.

The Andhra Pradesh NGOs Association and Andhra Pradesh Revenue Services Association, comprising teachers and employees, staged a demonstration near the Collectorate.

In-charge Collector V. Durga Das, District Revenue Officer M. Rama Rao and Eluru Revenue Divisional Officer K. Venugopal Reddy went to the demonstrators and expressed solidarity with the employees.
