Ministers inspect torched schools

Correspondent

IMPHAL: Education Minister L. Jayentakumar accompanied by other Ministers and MLAs toured on Thursday the four hill districts of Senapati, Tamenglong, Ukhrul and Chandel to make an assessment of the damage done to 11 school buildings after they were torched by suspected members of the All Naga Students’ Association of Manipur (ANSAM).

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has instructed the District Collectors to sound a red alert and take up necessary action to protect the remaining school buildings. Police and paramilitary personnel will be rushed to these districts if required, he said.

Though there was no claim for the arson by the ANSAM, police and district officials said it was part of the stir by the outfit to force the tribal students to study under the Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE).

Officials said that as part of the Naga unification movement, the ANSAM and some other Naga groups had demanded that the tribal students of these four districts of Manipur study under the NBSE. There were strong objections from the Manipur Government since this was unheard of anywhere in the country.
