Monsoon: crop loss of Rs.3 crore in district

KOCHI: The Agriculture Department on Thursday said there was crop loss close to Rs.3 crore in Ernakulam district in monsoon-related incidents.

Farmers were entitled to compensation of about Rs.78.40 lakh, the Principal Agriculture Officer said.

Plantain loss had been estimated at Rs.2.95 lakh, while 1,443 coconut trees were uprooted in heavy rain and strong winds. About 2,202 arecanut trees and 12,046 rubber trees suffered damage. Paddy cultivation in 200 hectares and tapioca farming in 104 hectares were also hit.

Five houses were partially damaged in monsoon-related incidents in various parts of the district on Thursday.

The estimated loss was Rs.22,000. Houses in Valakom village in the Muvattupuzha taluk and Mookannur and Karukutty in the Aluva taluk were affected.

Relief camps

Two more relief camps were opened in Paravur taluk, one each in Puthenvelikara and Chennamangalam on Thursday. About 77 persons were moved to these camps.
