Retired teacher threatens suicide

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: A retired headmaster Bhaskar Padhi of Lalsing village in Ganjam district, who is yet to receive pension even 20 years after his retirement, has threatened to commit suicide.

He has written letters to the Minister of Education and the Chief Minister urging them to settle his payments by August 30 failing which he threatened to take the extreme step.

Mr. Padhi started his career as a teacher in 1949. He retired as headmaster of Kavi Samrat Vidyapeeth at Kulada in 1987. Currently, he is drawing Rs. 385 per month as pension.

Mr. Padhi was not satisfied with the pension amount fixed by the government after 43 months of his retirement. The amount did not include any allowances. Mr. Padhi said he had served the department for 38 years but they had wrongly mentioned his service as 23 years. As result he was entitled to only ‘single pension’ worth Rs. 385 per month. He approached the High Court in 1997.

In 2000, the court directed the department to initiate steps so that Mr. Padhi could get pension. Till date, he had been getting Rs. 385.
