For irrigation: Water gushing out from Amaravathi reservoir near Udumalpet on Thursday.
UDUMALPET: Water was released from the Amaravathi reservoir near here on Thursday as it is about to overflow. Two thousand cusecs was released from the dam to irrigate the old ayacut areas and for drinking purposes up to Karur besides the release of 50 cusecs for Ramakulam and Kallapuram sub-canals.
Water level reached 87.72 feet against the full reservoir level of 90 feet on 8 a.m. on Thursday with a total storage of 3,841 million cubic feet. With torrential rain lashing the Western Ghats, the reservoir received an inflow of 2,133 cusecs. According to officials, water will be released from the dam till November 30 to irrigate a total of 7,520 acres in Udumalpet taluk in Coimbatore district. Water will be released for nine wettings with a five-day gap for each wetting.
The officials said that the discharge of 2,000 cusecs would be maintained for nine days mainly to cater to the drinking water requirements of Karur and Dharapuram areas. After that, it would be reduced to 300 cusecs.
Farmers in Udumalpet areas are expected to raise sugarcane and paddy crops.
