NEW DELHI: An alleged extortionist carrying a reward of Rs.25,000 on his head has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police in Jaipur. The accused mainly targeted cable operators.

The Special Cell received a tip-off that Jagdish Sharma, involved in cases of murder, attempt-to-murder and extortion, had been living in Jaipur under a fictitious name, Rohit. A team led by Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma was rushed to Jaipur and Jagdish was arrested in his hideout on Wednesday.

During interrogation, he purportedly disclosed that he was initiated into the world of crime in 1994 when he and his accomplices Vimal, Rajender and others stabbed Ganga Singh, a registered bad character of Paschimpuri. Jagdish, Vimal and Rajender were arrested in that case. He came out of jail a month later.

In 1995, Jagdish and his accomplices allegedly shot dead Chander Shekhar and his mother following a dispute between cable business rivals Vimal and Chander Shekhar’s brother Jawahar. Vimal was also killed in the cross-firing. Jagdish was arrested in that case in 1996 and remained in jail till 2001.

While in jail he came into contact with gangsters Rajesh Adhikari, Neeraj and Pawan. With their help, he managed to come out on parole and vanished from the scene. In 2001, he along with Rajesh Adhikari, who had escaped from police custody, and Kishanpal, a western Uttar Pradesh gangster, allegedly shot Narain Singh, a resident of Paschimpuri.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar said Jagdish, a registered bad character of the Punjabi Bagh police station, and his accomplices shot at and injured cable operator Prakash as he refused to pay up protection money.

Rajesh Adhikari and another gang member, Sanjay Jutshi, were arrested by the Delhi police in 2006 but Jagdish remained at large for long.
