Staff Reporter

Request by the administration to end the strike

“We had a long discussion with JNUSU office-bearers in the morning”

NEW DELHI: Even as the indefinite hunger strike by students at Jawaharlal Nehru University entered its sixth day on Thursday, the JNU administration despatched a delegation to meet the students’ union office-bearers to request them to call off the agitation.

“We had a long discussion with JNUSU office-bearers in the morning and we pleaded with them to end their hunger strike and come to the negotiating table. We told them that all issues mentioned in their charter of demands would be discussed,” said Chief Proctor H. B. Bohidar, who along with Dean of Students’ Welfare R. K. Kale and Associate Dean of Students’ Welfare V. K. Jain met the students.

“We told them that there should be a conducive atmosphere on the campus before we start discussions and the students said they will think over it and get back to us,” added Prof. Bohidar.

Referring to the dialogue with the administration, JNUSU president Dhananjay Tripathi said: “We had an open discussion and we conveyed our various demands, including evolving a mechanism for workers’ wages and revocation of the punishment order against students. Members of the delegation said they would discuss our demands with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bhattacharya.”
