Bangalore: The Legislative Council felicitated Prabahakar Kore, M.D. Ramesh Raju, B.A. Hasanabba, L. Hanumanthaiah and Umasri, who completed their tenure of six years on June 18. At a farewell function organised here on Thursday, Council Chairman B.K. Chandrashekar, Leader of the House D.H. Shankaramurthy and the Leader of the Opposition H.K. Patil applauded the commitment and contribution to society and parliamentary democracy of the five members who retired. Prof. Chandrashekar said Dr. Hanumanthaiah’s ability to bring a sense of balance and dignity to the issues he raised should be commended. Dr. Hanumanthaiah should also be congratulated for compiling a comprehensive report on improving the functioning of the School Development and Management Committees, he said. Mr. Patil said though Ms. Umasri entered politics after having carved a niche for herself in Kannada theatre and cinema, her conviction was commendable. They way she had fought for the welfare of weavers was an eye opener to many politicians, he said. Responding to the felicitation, the former MLCs, barring Mr. Kore who was held up in Belgaum, said the House had provided a fine opportunity for them to learn about the problems of the people and voice their views for the development of individuals and society. On the whole their tenure was a great human and political experience, they said. All of them were nominated to the Council by the Congress in 2001. With the retirement of the five members, the strength of the Congress in the 75-member House has been reduced to 34, excluding the Chairman. The strength of the other parties in the House is: Janata Dal (S) - 14, Bharatiya Janata Party - 14, Janata Dal (United) - 3, Independents - 4 and Chairman-1.
