They distributed pamphlets on poor state of streets
Plea to shift TASMAC outlet
TAMBARAM: A few dozen residents of a ward in East Tambaram, including a large number of women, assembled at the Tambaram municipal office on Thursday to protest the poor state of civic amenities in their area.
The residents of Ward No. 17 arrived at the local body’s office around 11 a.m. and squatted near the entrance. They distributed pamphlets to staff of the local body and also to visitors, highlighting their living conditions.
They said most of the streets in their area were not motorable.
Further, heaps of uncleared garbage on vacant plots and on land earmarked as open space for parks were an eyesore, they said.
They complained that sewage from several areas of East Tambaram stagnated in their locality leading to contamination of wells in several houses. There were no adequate bus shelters on the Velachery Main Road in East Tambaram and little attention was being paid to the stray dog menace, the residents said.
A TASMAC outlet near the Ahobila Mutt should be shifted, they said, as devotees visiting the place of worship feel embarrassed. The demonstration took the police and local body authorities by surprise as it was a spontaneous and flash protest by residents.
Tambaram municipal vice-chairman D. Kamaraj, who was present in the office at that time, gave a patient hearing to the residents’ grievances and pointed out to the development works currently on in their areas.
