Two councillors’ brawl causes tension

Staff Reporter

Commotion prevailed for sometime in Kancheepuram Municipal Council

AIADMK member questions Congress man’s ‘dominance’

KANCHEEPURAM: Confusion and commotion prevailed for sometime at the Kancheepuram Municipal Council meeting here on Thursday following an altercation between two councillors.

Trouble broke out when AIADMK councillor Suresh questioned why Congress councillor Kuppan always dominated the council meeting, not allowing others to raise issues pertaining to their wards.

Irked by this, Mr. Kuppan picked a quarrel with Mr. Suresh and in a fit of rage, attempted to attack him with a chair. However, other councillors prevented Mr. Kuppan and snatched away the chair.

In the meanwhile, Chairman V. Rajendran wound up the meeting, stating that all resolutions listed on the agenda were passed.

Councillors of the DMK, the PMK and the Congress felt surprised by the Chairman’s decision which ultimately helped to ease the tension in the Council hall.

Conveying their feelings to Commissioner Venkatesan, they asked how the chairman could wind up the meeting for the simple reason that two councillors had entered into a brawl.

They also demanded that the urgent meeting scheduled for the day be conducted without fail. Subsequently, the Commissioner spoke to the Chairman over mobile phone.

Mr. Rajendran readily obliged with the suggestion and conducted the urgent meeting.
