CPI (M) seeks probe into ‘police attack’ on Dalits

Special Correspondent

N. Varadarajan

CHENNAI: Secretary of the State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) N. Varadarajan on Thursday demanded a judicial probe into “police attack” on the Dalits of Appurasapuram Puthur village in Nagapattinam district on June 28.

In a statement here, Mr. Varadarajan said the police had destroyed huts put up by over 50 Dalit families on temple land. CPI (M) activists, who tried to prevent the police action, were injured in the attack. The police “foisted” cases on 42 persons, including 14 women.

Several CPI (M) activists courted arrest by participating in picketing programmes to highlight the demands at 11 places in the district, he said. He urged the Government to take action against police personnel involved in the attack. He also sought house sites for the Dalit families on the basis of an agreement reached in the presence of the local Revenue Divisional Officer.
