Madras High Court First Bench summons authorities concerned
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the Government to furnish the MBBS/BDS admission details in court on Friday.
When a writ petition, seeking deletion of names of candidates who had passed Plus Two examination prior to 2006-07 from the rank list for MBBS/BDS came up for admission on Thursday, the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice P. Jyothimani, asked the authorities concerned to come to court with all relevant details at 4.30 p.m. on Friday.
The petitioner, C. Maria Arul Rex of Neyveli, prayed for an interim injunction restraining the Health Secretary and the Selection Committee of the Directorate of Medical Education from commencing the counselling for admission to MBBS course on July 9.
The petitioner said Plus Two students belonging to the 2006-07 batch should not be treated on a par with their counterparts of earlier batches as the higher secondary syllabus had changed from the academic year 2005-06.
He pointed out that while a total of 179 students had scored centum in all the three main subjects – Physics, Chemistry and Biology – in 2004-05, the number was one in 2005-06 and six in 2006-07.
Key provision
The prospectus for admission this year had deleted a key provision which prohibited students already studying professional courses from applying for medical or dental courses.
The object of the clause is to prevent students who had already joined a professional course from discontinuing the course and joining medical or dental courses, thereby wasting a seat. Deletion of this provision had resulted in at least 400 students getting top ranks in this year’s MBBS/BDS rank list, the petitioner said.
