Stating her position: UPA-Left parties Presidential poll candidate Pratibha Patil addressing a meeting of legislators during her visit to Puducherry on Thursday.
Puducherry: Economic growth should be inclusive and all sections of society, such as Dalits, tribals, minorities, youth and women, should benefit from development, Pratibha Patil, presidential nominee of the United Progressive Alliance and Left parties said here on Thursday. Seeking the support of legislators of the ruling Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Communist Party of India, Pattali Makkal Katchi, Puducherry Munnetra Congress and Independents of Puducherry at a joint meeting here on Thursday, Ms. Patil said she was deeply conscious of the great honour bestowed upon her and the “awe-inspiring responsibility of the office of President.” “In spite of all attempts to tarnish my image, I remain steadfast in my commitment to serve my countrymen and women in the highest and most noble traditions of our democracy. I will continue to serve the nation with humility and with a deep sense of duty,” she said. “I would have the great honour, when elected, of becoming India’s first woman President. Sixty years after Independence, our Republic will have a woman president.” She said Puducherry represented a harmonious synthesis of several cultures, languages and influences.
