Watershed development work reviewed

Tuticorin: The Collector, R. Palaniyandi, on Thursday conducted aninspection to review the progress of watershed development activities at Achankulam, Maruthanvalvu and Kothali villages in the district under the National Watershed Development Project for Rain-fed Areas (NWDPRA) during 2006-07.

He assessed the construction of farm ponds and check dams, renovation of supply channel, ploughing, horticulture planting and other land development activities, currently under way at Achankulam, Maruthanvalvu and Kothali villages.

Dr. Palaniyandi said that during the last fiscal, work on an outlay of Rs.4.41 lakh were taken up at Maruthanvalvu under the NWDPRA.

As part of it, a total of three farm ponds and an equal number of minor check dams would be constructed in the village. Fruit yielding trees would be grown were being planted and Integrated Pest Management activities had been taken up over a three hectare area. He said that a sum of Rs.56,567 was disbursed as revolving fund to two self-help groups in the area.

Similarly, the development of integrated farming systems were taken up under the project at Kothali and Achankulam at a cost of Rs.4.41 lakh each.

He said that once the works were completed, agricultural productivity and production from these regions would be enhanced. Conservation and judicious management of natural resources would be promoted. Besides, the project would generate more jobs for people in the rural areas throughout the year.

The Collector then interacted with the landless agricultural labourers of Pasuvanthanai and surrounding areas, who were given two acres of wasteland each free to explore the possibilities of developing it into a cultivable land.

The Joint Director of Agriculture, M. Mohanados, and senior Agriculture department officials, C. Gandhirajan, Ramalingam, and Velkumar, were present.
