Storage in reservoirs goes up

CHENNAI: Storage of several reservoirs in the State is now more than what it was last year. This covers six major dams — Mullaperiyar, Amaravathi, Papanasam, Manimuthar, Perunchani and Sholayar. On Thursday, Mullaperiyar recorded about 4.6 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft) whereas the storage on the same day last year was 2.8 tmcft. At the permitted water level of 136 ft, storage is about 6 tmcft. The dam had an inflow of 2,600 cubic feet per second (cusecs) with a discharge of 1,275 cusecs. Storage at Amaravathi was 3.8 tmcft (capacity: 4.047 tmcft) while it was 2.507 tmcft last year. The Papanasam, Manimuthar and Perunchani reservoirs recorded 2.6 tmcft (5.5 tmcft), 1.5 tmcft (5.5 tmcft) and 1.6 tmcft (2.89 tmcft) while the first two had about 1 tmcft each and the last about half tmcft last year.
