CHENNAI: The Medical Council of India has given the Tamil Nadu Government the go-ahead to conduct counselling for MBBS admissions to three colleges that were not given the clearance earlier, Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran said on Thursday. The decision was communicated to him late on Wednesday night after his meeting in New Delhi with Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, Mr. Ramachandran said. While the orders would reach the State in a few days, the Health Department had officially been given the green signal to conduct counselling for the three colleges as well. “The MCI had pointed out some technical flaws related to the promotion system. A delegation from the State explained the procedure of teaching staff in medical colleges to the Union Minister and his team,” Mr. Ramachandran told reporters. The three colleges are in Vellore, Theni and Kanyakumari. As a result, the State now has 1,398 seats available in government medical colleges. While the total number of MBBS seats available in the government sector is 1,645 seats, 247 will be added to the All India quota pool. In addition, there are seats from private medical colleges: IRT Perunthurai — 39, PSG Medical College, Coimbatore — 65, Chettinad Medical College — 97. The government will also take into account 50 seats that will be available from the other college denied permission by the MCI — Sree Mookambikai Medical College, he said. Responding to former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s statement, he said it was not the first time that the MCI had denied and then granted permission for existing medical colleges. Mr. Ramachandran listed the names of colleges denied permission by the MCI during the AIADMK rule: K.A.P.Viswanathan Medical College, Tiruchi, in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005; Kanyakumari Medical college (2004-2005); Tuticorin Medical College (2004-2005, 2005-2006 and 2006-2007); Tirunelveli Medical College (2005-2006); Kilpauk Medical College (2005-2006).
