GOING GREEN: Industrialists staging a dharna in Dharwad on Thursday.
DHARWAD: Several industrialists under the aegis of the Dharwad Growth Centre Industries Association staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Thursday urging for protection of the green belt and public park area in the Belur Industrial Area near Dharwad. The protestors said that they had brought the issue before the District-level High Power Committee and the Deputy Commissioner, who heads the committee, had promised them that not an inch of land in the green belt and public park area in the estate would be given to private parties. Inability
However, he had expressed his inability to do anything if the land allotments were made by Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB), Bangalore. Consequently, the association had registered its protest against allotting land in the green belt area with the KIADB. But despite their protest, the KIADB had allotted lands to private parties and was taking steps to hand them over to the allottees, they complained. Housing sites
Similarly, steps were being taken to allot the land earmarked for building houses for industrial workers, to private parties for other purposes, they alleged. The protestors said that initially 241.52 acres of land in Mummigatti village near Dharwad Growth Centre had been acquired by the KIADB to exclusively develop a residential colony for the growth centre industries in 1998. However, around 80 acres of land was allotted for other purposes later and now attempts were being made to allot the remaining land to private parties for other purposes, they alleged. They said steps were being taken in violation of the regulations, and urged the KIADB to stop the process immediately. They also submitted a memorandum in this regard to the district administration.
