CLEARING THE DOUBTS: C. Umashankar, Managing Director, ELCOT, clarifying a doubt raised by Leena Nair at the Secretariat on Thursday.

CHENNAI: One hundred Indian Administrative Service officers of the Tamil Nadu cadre, drawn from across the batches, headed back to a school of sorts for a few hours at the Secretariat here on Thursday to learn to work on different operating systems.

The session was organised by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) after the Government sanctioned laptop computers, under a special scheme, to all IAS officers of the cadre.

The officers can retain the laptop even if they are transferred to a new post.

C. Umashankar, Managing Director, ELCOT, and a team from the ELCOT were at the Secretariat to train the officers in Suse Linux Operating System. “Officers are generally familiar with Windows. That is the reason to explain to them on Linux,” said an official. The laptops have both Windows XP and Suse Linux.
