Mumbai, Sindh universities set to sign MoU to swap faculty

MUMBAI: The University of Mumbai, which has just concluded its sesquicentennial celebrations, and the University of Sindh, Pakistan’s second oldest and largest institution of higher education, are to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for exchange of faculty, scholars and students. It will be signed during Vice-Chancellor Vijay Khole’s visit in August in response to an invitation from his counterpart of the Sindh varsity, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui.

Dr. Khole told The Hindu this would perhaps be the first institutionalised confidence-building measure from the academia of the two neighbours in the realm of people-to-people contact and would help improve bilateral relations. Dr. Khole said the Board of College and University Development and the Management Council of Mumbai University had considered the draft MoU and were accepting it. The MoU will enable the faculty of both universities to teach at each other’s campus, allow scholars to visit and stay on the campus of the other for research and study and would even enrol students for full courses.

The universities would also arrange students’ accommodation with local families to provide them opportunity for cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. The universities would grant two full scholarships to each other’s students to enable them pursue courses on their campuses. These exchanges are expected to be in all disciplines, 97 languages, social sciences, liberal arts and science and technology, particularly information technology.

The University of Sindh that has teaching and research programmes in 43 disciplines has the largest campus in Pakistan, situated at Jamshoro on the banks of the Indus river near Hyderabad. It regards Mumbai University as its mother institution.
