French ex-Prime Minister recovering after surgery

KOLKATA: The former French Prime Minister, Michael Rocard, who underwent surgery at the Calcutta Medical Research Institute on June 30 for subdural haematoma, will be discharged on Saturday, according to Chief Operating Officer of the hospital Rupak Barua.

Among those who inquired about his health was French President Nicolas Sarkozy. He spoke over phone to Mr. Rocard recently, Mr. Barua told The Hindu. French Ambassador Dominique Girard would be coming here next week to meet Mr. Roca rd in a hotel.

Mr. Rocard (76), who was France’s Socialist Prime Minister between 1988 and 1991, was here to attend a function organised by the West Bengal Federation of United Nations Association. On the day of the event, he fell ill and was rushed to the hospital. A CT scan revealed a clot in the brain.
