BSNL employees to go on strike on July 11

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Executives and employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) have decided to strike work on July 11 in protest against the delay in execution of its mobile network expansion project.

“We will hold a day-long nationwide strike on July 11, and if the Government fails to move ahead with the Rs. 20,000 crore project that is crucial for BSNL’s growth and competitiveness, we will proceed on indefinite strike,” V.A.N. Namboodiri, convener of the Joint Forum of BSNL and MTNL Unions and Associations, said on Thursday.

BSNL employees were forced to hold agitations to pressure the Government to clear the addition of 4.5 crore new mobile lines on the BSNL network. He also said BSNL employees would not support any move to reduce the number of new mobile lines as BSNL, which has lost its No.2 position to a private player in mobile market. BSNL cannot lag behind in the competitive telecom market, he said.
